In this paper, an innovative method is introduced to compare different data rate choices in a fair manner. It will be shown that it is possible to configure broadcast transmissions with different data rates to produce exactly the same level of interferences in the channel by manually adjusting the power used. In turn, the performances of these transmissions are compared to identify the optimal data rate. The rest of this paper is organized as follows: Section 2 describes DSRC technology and the data rate options in details. Section 3 presents previous work. Section 4 discusses the proper methodology for this study, including a description of a DSRC channel load metric needed by the methodology. Section 5 lists all the details of the simulation setup. Section 6 analyzes the results. Section 7 summarizes the findings.
