A new business model is needed for vehicle data communications to be economically successful and to allow it to be rolled out widely in mass market vehicles. The business model must recognize that user-centric services should not be provided through an embedded vehicle data communications capability. User-centric services will be provided through the user's future generation personal communications device - a high powered combination that includes mobile telephone, PDA, digital media player, etc. Vehicle data communications can and should focus on applications for which the vehicle is an integral part: safety and support services for the vehicle and its occupants. Communications for these vehicle-centric and vehicle-manufacturer-center services are data messages, not voice messages. The messages will be handled by an in-vehicle data communications unit (DCU) that, since it is built exclusively to handle data messages, can be made more robust, more reliable, and less expensive than one that would handle both voice and data. With a major focus on the safety benefits that vehicle data communications can provide, the DCU must be designed for long life, including the ability to adapt to new communications technologies via software updates. In short, for vehicle data communications to succeed, it must have a new focus that addresses the safety and support needs of vehicle manufacturers and their customers.
