In this paper, an active knee bolster is proposed for the injury protection of occupant's leg in vehicle collision. Control objectives are not only to reduce the femur load to less than that of a pssive knee bolster but also to suppress pelvis movement and deceleration. A feedback control system is applied to follow the reference signal of the contact force between the knee and the instrument panel. It is demonstrated that the active knee bolster can improve the performance of the passive knee bolster by carrying out simulations and experiments. Also, the efficiency of the feedback control system for the proposed active knee bolster is verified using a three-dimensional model in multibody dynamics software.
