Overhead Presentation. Aleris International, Inc. is a global leader in aluminium rolled products and extrusions, aluminium recycling and specification alloy production. Headquartered in Beachwood, Ohio, the company operates 50 production facilities in North America, Europe, South America and Asia. To the European locations of Aleris belong rolling mills in Koblenz and Duffel and extrusion plants in Bonn, Bitterfeld, Vogt and Duffel. Aleris Aluminum Koblenz GmbH (former Corus Aluminium Walzprodukte GmbH) is a leading supplier to aerospace, shipbuilding, vehicle, or mould and tool industries. As part of a strategic plan to provide cost effective materials with highest property performance in extreme dimensions, various development projects, investment programs as well as other activities have been carried out enabling Aleris to become a major supplier of semi-finished aluminium to the aircraft industry and a strong partner of the major airframe manufacturers. Currently a new 160' breakdown mill is being installed to produce even wider plates and sheets and to further improve product performance and to increase production capacity. In order to help the aircraft Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) achieve the aggressive targets of increased passenger and cargo capacities, as well as lower fuel burn and larger ranges, it has become increasingly important for metallic materials suppliers to understand the property requirements and the way these are controlled and dictated by the design parameters involved in designing a new model. As a result Aleris has developed new aluminium sheet and plate materials mainly used for fuselage and wing structural components. These new alloys are specially designed for optimum performance considering new manufacturing techniques and aircraft designs recently introduced or to be applied for future aircraft concepts. Major focus is put on highly advanced AIMgSc alloys, such as K08242 and K08542 with a density in the range of today's Al-Lithium alloys for fuselage skin sheet or other applications, where sheet products in complicated shaped parts are used. Their excellent fatigue and damage tolerance properties, good impact and corrosion resistance along with their excellent weldability offer large potential benefits in terms of weight and cost savings. The substitution of assemblies and built-up structures by integral or monolithic structures results in a substantial reduction of the number of components and joints, leading to a reduced structural weight and especially to significant production cost savings. Thus, Aleris' latest developed 7xxx alloy for thin to ultra-thick plates is AA7081 in various tempers, for any kind of integrated parts such as wing panels, ribs, spars or fuselage frames. Dependent on the requirements, either more damage tolerant or higher strength variants are available. The weight saving potential of AA7081 compared with currently used 7XXX alloys will be shown for different applications on the basis of structural analyses and trade study results. This paper will provide an overview of Aleris' capabilities as well as the new and improved sheet and plate alloys for various aircraft applications and will outline some future developments.
