This chapter gives an overview on the aluminium sheet alloys that are currently used for outer, inner and structural automotive applications. This includes the typical mechanical properties, such as strength and formability, and information on the corrosion resistance of the various alloys. Furthermore, the different surface modifications are described that are currently applied on the aluminium strip surface, such as special surface topographies, chemical and electrochemical treatments, lubricants and primer coatings. The advantages of these surface modifications during vehicle manufacturing are discussed.
