Stepless transmissions require variable elements. The established component for this purpose is a hydrostatic pump / motor combination. This paper starts with an overview of the tasks and the design types of hydrostatic variators, followed by an analysis regarding their advantages and disadvantages. Great attention must be given to the achievement flexibility and simplicity, fuel efficiency, low overall costs, low noise and precise handling today and in future by comprehensive contemplation of vehicle application, vehicle concept, transmission layout and design of the components. By taking a progressive and modular technology as a basis and integrating the specific aspects of operation differing from a common hydrostatic unit into stepless transmissions specialized series products can be created that provide the right mixture of overall performance criteria to a CVT. In an outlook future solutions are pointed out and suggestions are made how to not only improve the commercial and technical performance in existent applications by consequent simplification, but also how to achieve applications for stepless transmissions which have not been opened up so far because of cost reasons.
