It is well known that, despite all research efforts, passenger cars are still fairly inefficient means of transportation. The fuel economy of such vehicles can be improved in various ways. A possibility lies in reducing the external load, for instance by lowering the weight and air drag of the vehicle; another chance is to improve the propulsion system, e.g., the powertrain. Increasing the efficiency of the different powertrain components, such as the engine and the transmission, is one way to do so. Another approach is to operate the powertrain as a whole in a more optimal fuel way. With regard to the improvement of the efficiency of driveline components, the aim of this research is to provide an effective model able to evaluate the influence of powertrain seals friction on the global vehicle efficiency. In particular the presence of seals in three major subsystems, i.e. engine, gearbox and wheel bearings is here considered. The seals are inserted into a complete vehicle model relative to a middle segment passenger car, developed in AMESim environment. In order to evaluate their effects on the vehicle performances, the model allows to compute power losses and increased fuel consumption directly linked with each group of seals. Different operating conditions and mission profiles are examined; attention is focused on the new European driving cycle (NEDC). Finally a sensitivity analysis is presented in which the authors quantify the benefits, in terms of reduction of fuel consumption, a seals manufacturer can obtain by reducing the resistant torques, i.e. acting on the geometry configuration and on the materials of the seals.
