In the last few decades there has been a surge in the number of plastic components used in the automobile. Alongside applications in the engine compartment, fuel system and bodywork, this increase in plastic consumption is primarily to be found in the automobile interior. Forecasting and market estimations for the use of plastics in automotive design see further potential for growth in this group of materials in the passenger compartment above all. With this increase in plastic components, there will also be an increasing use of decorative components, predominantly Tecomelt parts. Applications range from jong, narrow pillar trim parts to large-area components such as door trim panels and luggage compartment lining. In principle the selection of a suitable process depends an both the component shape and also the decorative materials available. The processes are linked throughout with other techniques such as Gasmelt or MuCell. Key factors here remain the cell as a whole and also the automation solution tailored to the mould, especially the gripper unit design and decorative material handling. As regards compression techniques, injection-compression moulding will frequently be found although back-compression moulding has continued to make advances in component quality. In injection-compression moulding, active sheet parallelism regulation an the part of the clamping unit has had a lasting and positive effect an component quality, component costs and the service life of the moulds.
