Integrating the functions of the vehide's individual chassis systems, currently operated more-or-less stand-alone, into one Global Chassis Control System will open new dimensions regarding improvements to driving safety, driving comfort, and driving pleasure. Based on the general advantages of this integrated control approach, this paper describes the chassis subsystems brakes, steering, suspension, and tires, their structure, function and interfaces and their significance for the network system. The steps towards the development of 'dry' drive-by-wire chassis as well as the functional potential through the networking of control are shown by examples of first spin-offs. An outlook is given on the possibilities to generate comprehensive safety protection, through further networking the intelligent chassis with the electronic systems of passive safety on one hand, and their chances for improvement of the ratio of performance to cost on the other hand.
