A mercury free light source for office automation and automotive lighting was developed. Main characteristics are high brightness levels, instant start, fast switching capability, stability, homogeneity, and independence of the operating temperature. Another key feature is the internal electrode structure for high contact safety, which also allows surrounding metal structures for temperature control and EMI-shielding. First applications of this light source will be in office automation where the lamp features make a new generation of fast digital copy machines possible.The feasibility of an automotive backlight was demonstrated. In the future this lamp will also be the light source for automotive backlighting because of the temperature and environmental concerns.
