The principle of Xe excimer lamps and the benefits of a pulsed operation mode were discussed. With this technology an efficient Hg-free linear fluorescent aperture lamp could be realized, having high brightness in the aperture, instant start up, no temperature dependence and no environmental issues. These lamps were used to build an temperature independent, dimmable 7' LCD backlight with a brightness up to 5000 Cd/m2. In the next steps the system efficacy will be improved in order to enhance the brightness of lamp and backlight and to lower the power input. Ongoing lifetests are not finalized yet. However, it is expected that the system lifetime is compatible with the lifetime of the vehicle due to the electrodeless design. Therefore no lamp replacement should be necessary.
