The paper describes the experience of electric drive bus creation of 50 passenger capacity and electric drive truck samples, which use ESMA traction capacitors as the only on-board power source. The above vehicles have been developed under an order awarded by the Moscow City Government and are suited for operation over fixed routes available within city limits. Specific features of this application were taken into account when developing the vehicles, and that allowed to use a capacitor bank having relatively low weight (about 950 kg) and energy stored (8.6 kWh). The vehicles remained in virtually round-the clock service due to short charge time (about 15 minutes) of capacitors. Charging was implemented at stationary charging stations located at terminal points of the route. The paper specifies the results of electric drive bus and electric drive truck tests including experimental data on energy characteristics measured during acceleration, uniform motion, and recuperative braking providing energy regeneration back to the capacitor bank.
