The main markets for industrial lasers are usually divided geographically into the USA, Europe and Japan. Laser technology in Japan has rapidly developed and the Japanese market has grown steadily even during the recession days as well as into the early nineties. Though the percentage of laser welding in practical applications in Japan had relatively been low compared with that in Europe so far, laser welding is gradually advancing into almost all important sectors of industry, especially into automotive industry with CO2 laser and high power YAG laser. Even in the electronic industry, cw YAG laser with high beam quality have not only been pushing aside pulse YAG lasers but also have opened new application fields. On the other hand, the precise processing with excimer laser or short pulse CO2 laser are progressing in the electric field, especially for printed circuit board, and in medical applications which are distinctive in Japan now.
