In a comparative study a 1,2 l swirl-chamber Diesel engine is supercharged by a turbocharger, a pressure-wave charger and a positive-displacement charger. The experimentally measured torques in steady state and transient engine operation are reported. This is followed by calculation and comparison of performance and fuel consumption of a car equipped with these engines. Finally areas of further improvements of these superchargers are outlined.
