The general approach of nondestructive carcass integrity testing employs a mechanical impedance technique. It has been shown that the tire behaves like any solid matter, and hence, it exhibits mechanical resonances. Thus, the tire is mechanically excited, while on the vehicle, by an electro-dynamic shaker positioned precisely on the center of the tread directing its motion radially. The sidewall response, in the region of the force application, is measured by displacement transducers of novel design located on opposite sides of the tire. As the tire is rotated, it is excited with a random forcing function (bandwidth of 100 - 400 Hz), and the data are analyzed by an appropriately designed data handling system that is sensitive to internal carcass flaws. Application of the mechanical impedance technique is demonstrated in a prototype advanced-state-of-the-art automated inspection machine that is capable of discovering internal carcass flaws. Further, the machine is designed to be incorporated in future vehicle inspection stations. (Peters)
