The concepts of the overall electric supply and control of the Paris Metro, which consumes 223 MW, are reviewed. The supply and control of the trains on all 13 lines and the control of the issue of tickets and of the access of passengers at all 366 stations are covered. The guiding principle of 'continuity of service is vital' is enunciated and the steps taken to meet this are described. These steps imply total redundancy of functions, making use of specially developed inverters. It is pointed out that, although the overall cost is 15% higher than for a conventional ready-made system, almost total reliability is guaranteed.
