Review of history of Paris subway, its extensions and alterations to original layout; lengthening of stations, modernization of rolling stock, including use of rubber-tired cars, electrical equipment, and automatic train operation; it is shown how public rail transport of Paris region has under-gone changes in general shape of system, built originally for population of from 3 to 4 million, to be adapted for urban region of 15 million inhabitants.
