The FS-400M System is a large capacity, long-haul submarine optical cable transmission system which carries 17280 two-way voice channels over single-mode fibers in the 1.3 mum wavelength band. The authors present system design, major system parameters, and the main technical features of submerged repeaters, submarine cables and highly reliable components. Also, it gives the results of the long-term stability test carried out in Sagami Bay from 1982 to 1984 and the deep sea trial carried out off the Ogasawara Islands in November, 1984.
