In designing a hand-held laser rangefinder for military use, the usual key factors are performance, size and weight, and cost. A compromise is necessary in order to achieve a unit that can range to 4 km with an accuracy of +or-5-10 m. The additional requirement of eye safety makes the attainment of this goal practically impossible.
