The Flight Dynamics Laboratory has supported and is continuing to support several efforts designed to evaluate the pilot usability and acceptance of pictorial display formats as information transfer media for aircrew members of future generation of aircraft. This paper discusses a study designed to develop candidate concepts for the content of pictorial threat displays, and to assess whether full color coding provides a performance increment over monochromatic presentation of information. Results indicate that complex threat data can be conveyed pictorially, and that color does provide an advantage.
