The Li-Al/FeS battery offers a unique combination of high performance and desirable engineering characteristics. 1) The battery provides very high volumetric and gravimetric energy storage. High power can be designed into the system, if desired, by trading off energy density for power density. 2) The electrochemical reactions do not produce gases. The system can be sealed, which is a major safety advantage. No maintenance is required. 3) The cells and battery are rugged and safe. Electric-vehicle cells have been crushed in 30 mph crash-barrier tests without incident. Vibration and repeated thermal cycling have also been shown to have no effect upon cell performance. 4) Thermal management is accomplished by the use of a high-efficiency insulation developed by the Linde Division of Union Carbide in the DOE program. 5) Small battery tests in the laboratory indicate that thebattery could have outstanding reliability. A ten cell series-connected battery continued to operate at a reduced output with up to three failed cells.
