In this paper I shall cover some of the concepts which have led to the design of today's microprocessors based Traffic Controllers. Today's controllers have evolved from work started in the mid seventies when two studies took place. One examined the feasibility of using an eight bit 8008 microprocessor as the basis of a controller. The other examined the feasibility of a PROM (programmable read only memory) based controller. The 8008 proved to be more expensive than the PROM based controller. Field backup for the PROM version, especially overseas, proved difficult and the idea was abandoned. The use of microprocessors was not abandoned and in 1978 we brought to the market place a Cableless Linking Unit (C.L.U.) based on the Intel 4040 four bit processor. A C.L.U. provides the facility of co-ordinating controllers in a network without the necessity of having to provide linking cables with their associated expensive roadworks. This linking facility coupled with the ability to act as a 'group timer' provides a relatively cheap but powerful system.
