The author looks briefly at the advantages microprocessors can offer in a data communication system for rail traffic signalling applications and considers the problems associated with providing a reliable and cost effective design. He argues that the future holds many advances in data communication and microprocessor technology and will therefore provide many interesting and varied opportunities.
