It is now acknowledged that climate change questions planetary sustainability and resilience. Apparently, one of the major contributors to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is the transport sector, which has attracted sincere attention of the environmental sustainability efforts. This chapter will delve into the complex while critical connection between transport systems and environmental sustainability, with a particular focus on the role of transport emissions in accelerating climate change. More specifically, the chapter will explore various sources of emissions within different transport modes, including road, rail, aviation, and maritime transport. Each of these modes contributes differently to the overall emissions profile, with road transport being one of the most significant sources of CO2 emissions. Aviation and maritime transport, though essential for global trade and connectivity, also emit large amounts of GHGs, particularly due to long-distance travel and freight. The chapter will examine how these transport modes contribute to global climate change, while also underscoring the rising challenges posed by urbanisation, population growth, and rapid economic expansion. A key component of the chapter will be the geographical dimension of transport emissions, unveiling disparities between countries, regions and continents. While developed nations often have higher per capita emissions due to widespread vehicle ownership and extensive transport networks, developing regions are experiencing rapid growth in transport emissions as economic and infrastructure development accelerates. This geographical analysis sheds light on how different regions face unique challenges and risks in mitigating transport-related emissions. Moreover, the chapter will discuss traditional and novel methods for detecting and measuring transport-related emissions. These methods range from satellite monitoring and ground-based sensors to innovative technologies such as mobile apps that track individual carbon footprints. Comprehending these methods is now essential for policymakers and academics seeking to accurately assess and reduce transport emissions. Finally, the chapter will conclude by showcasing the urgent need for innovative solutions to decarbonise the transport sector. It will summarise the potential of low-carbon fuels, electrification of transport systems, and advancements in sustainable urban mobility. By implementing these solutions, the transport sector can follow a more sustainable and decarbonised future pathway, helping to mitigate the impacts of climate change while supporting global development and justice.
