This chapter will delve into the complex while critical connection between transport systems and environmental sustainability, with a particular focus on the role of transport emissions in accelerating climate change. More specifically, the chapter will explore various sources of emissions within different transport modes, including road, rail, aviation, and maritime transport. Each of these modes contributes differently to the overall emissions profile, with road transport being one of the most significant sources of CO2 emissions. Aviation and maritime transport, though essential for global trade and connectivity, also emit large amounts of GHGs, particularly due to long-distance travel and freight.
