Abstract The article is devoted to the problems of improving the management system of railway freight transportation based on the concept of Industry 4.0. During the study, was identified the main competitor of rail traffic - automotive freight transportation. Investigation of the rail freight market has shown that there are a number of problems that prevent them from taking a leading position. The main part of research was directed on the European market, especially on the Slovak Republic. Was considered modern monitoring systems of transport logistics and was determined that the most advanced and responsive to the demands of the modern consumer is tracking technology based on GPS - navigation control technology. Proposals were developed to improve the efficiency of freight wagons monitoring system by using electronic control unit based on geolocation technology integrated into carriage, they will signalize about condition of the freight in active and passive form. Such sensor will be able to integrate to the IoT system through a specialized Internet platform that also supports mobile version program. Were justified the economic feasibility of introducing this system to European rail freight and development prospects of the railway transportation in the context of the Industry 4.0.
