Heterogeneous vessel traffic flow, which consists of traditional manned ships and advanced autonomous vessels in a certain proportion, is the frontier and hotspot of future vessel traffic flow research. In order to analyze the impacts of mixing autonomous vessels into vessel traffic flow, firstly, four kinds of vessel driving modes are considered, and a simulation-based analysis approach is proposed with modified IDM models for different vessel driving mode traffic. Secondly, based on the modified car-following models, a vessel traffic simulation platform is built to study macroscopic characteristics of heterogeneous vessel traffic flows. Finally, fundamental diagrams of homogeneity and heterogeneous traffic flow are deduced and analyzed. The results show that, (1) the simulation results for vessel traffic with different proportion of autonomous vessels have a high consistency with the theoretical curve; (2) with the increase of the proportion of autonomous vessels, the capacity of heterogeneous traffic flow in channel and restricted waters can be significantly improved.
