This chapter discusses the opportunities openedModular \bbyReconfigurable \btheMulti-robot systems \b utilization of modular reconfigurableReconfigurable \bmulti-robot systemsMulti-robot systems \b applied in space missions. The involved requirements are considered, solutions already existing and challenges still existing are highlighted. Firstly, different conceivable mission scenarios and application concepts for such systems are presented and the advantages that can be achieved by their use are pointed out. The general design, functionality and required key components, both, in the field of hardware and software are described referring to a concrete example of a system which was developed at DFKI Robotics Innovation Center for planetary surface exploration missions. It is presented how different mission objectives can be achieved by using a reconfigurableReconfigurable \bmulti-robot systemsMulti-robot systems \b. The procedures and components required to make a multi-robot system feasible are discussed. Planning and control of task distribution and reconfigurationReconfiguration \b operations of such a complex and flexible system are considered as well. The chapter concludes with a summary and an outlook on remaining challenges.
