Engineering processes in the rail vehicle industry have changed over the last 25 years. As the involvement of state railways in product development has been abandoned, manufacturers are now developing vehicle platforms that cover the requirements of as many customers as possible and can be adapted to specific customer wishes. The approval and commissioning process has also changed significantly. The product creation processes of rail vehicles up to obtaining the commissioning approval are described. The nowadays common support of product creation from development, design, work and production planning to manufacturing and assembly including quality assurance and service by computer-based technologies (CAD, CAE, CAP, CAM, CAQ, CAS, etc.) is explained with many examples from the individual phases of the engineering process.
