British Rail's Class 15X series of diesel railcars weigh much the same as modern heavy goods vehicles and require a similar power-weight ratio. Therefore it is natural that horizontal railcar engines should derive from the highly developed truck power units. This paper describes the special features necessary to make the transition from the vertical to the horizontal engine in a form suitable for the British Rail railcars. As now developed, the engine has been installed in the prototype Class 154, and provides power suitable for a number of railcar specifications requiring 224–261 kW (300–350 hp).
