This paper discusses some of the design and development problems experienced on high-speed diesel engines intended for use in passenger cars. The broad layout of a diesel engine required to give a performance comparable to that of the gasoline powered vehicle is reviewed. Diesel combustion chambers suitable for high-speed operation are discussed, and the procedure adopted to select the specification of the injection equipment is outlined. The friction losses of diesel engines in relation to those of gasoline units, and problems associated with thermal loadings of the cylinder head and piston are also reviewed. This paper discusses some of the design and development problems experienced on high-speed diesel engines intended for use in passenger cars.
