Design and development problems experienced on engines for passenger cars; layout of diesel engine required to give performance comparable to that of gasoline powered vehicle is reviewed; diesel combustion chambers suitable for high-speed operation, and procedure adopted to select specification of injection equipment; friction losses of diesel engines in relation to those of gasoline units, and problems associated with thermal loadings of cylinder head and piston are reviewed.
