This paper opens with an historical sketch on front end shovel loaders. It then deals with the evolution of the Allis Chalmers front end shovel loader, model 645, and with the test program involved in its development. There is discussion on the selection between the articulated and rigid frame, development and testing of the power train components, placement of the articulated joint midway in the wheel base for tracking on front and rear wheels, the self-contained rear power module with the operator located on this module, and constant rate steering.
