History of front end shovel loaders, evolution of Allis Chalmers front end shovel loader, model 645, and test program involved in its development; design of articulated frame loader incorporates many design features of previous rigid frame experimental model; power train was designed to be matched system from fan to wheel; engine used is Allis Chalmers 3500, 6-cyl, 4-cycle, in-line, turbocharged diesel engine; other outstanding features such as placement of articulated joint midway in wheelbase for tracking on front and rear wheels, self-contained rear power module with operator located on module, and constant rate steering.
