The OSTA-2 mission was conducted as planned on the Shuttle STS-7 flight, which was launched from the Kennedy Space Center at 7:33 a.m. EDT on June 18, 1983, and after 6 days of on-orbit operations, was landed at Edwards Air Force Base, CA, on June 24, 1983, at 9:57 a.m. EDT. The mission demonstrated the capability of a NASA-developed cargo bay carrier structure (the Mission Peculiar Equipment Support Structure-MPESS) to accommodate an attached payload in the cargo bay and provided verification of a materials processing facility (the Materials Experiment Assembly-MEA) to conduct materials science investigations on the Shuttle. Additionally, two of three experiment furnaces in the MEA were successfully verified and scientific samples were processed for analysis. The MPESS carrier, the MEA facility, and the experiment furnaces will be reflown on the Materials Science Laboratory (MSL-1) mission in 1984. The German Project MAUS cooperative payloads were satisfactorily accommodated on the OSTA-2 payload and accomplished all operational and data retrieval objectives. The mission is rated as successful based on the accomplishment of prelaunch objectives as described in the enclosed Post Launch Mission Operation Report.
