OSTA-1, the first scientific payload for the Space Shuttle, is scheduled to be launched on STS-2 from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). The planned orbit is circular with an altitude of 137 nautical miles and an inclination of 38 degrees. The total STS-2 flight time will be approximately 124 hours. During this time, the OSTA-1 payload will be operated for approximately . 88 hours. The objectives of the OSTA-1 mission are: to provide an early demonstration of the Space Shuttle s capabilities to conduct science, applications, and technology research in the attached mode ; and to obtain data on Earth resources, environmental quality, ocean conditions, meteorology, and life sciences. The attached Mission Operation Report contains specific details pertinent to the OSTA-1 mission. Detailed data on the Space Shuttle and the STS-2 mission are contained in the STS-2 Mission Operation Report No. M-989-81-02 and in the Orbital Flight Test Reference Document (MOR No. 989-81).
