Gemini Flight number three (GT-3) is the first manned orbital flight in the Gemini Program and the third flight in a series of twelve planned to develop long-duration and rendezvous capability, docking techniques, extravehicular activities, and controlled reentry. The GT-1 mission was basically a flight test to prove the space vehicle's capability in the launch and orbital insertion environment. The GT-2 mission demonstrated the spacecraft's structural integrity during a maximum heating rate reentry and water landing. The GT-3 mission will demonstrate the capability of the spacecraft to successfully accommodate the two astronauts in a three-orbit mission in preparation for future manned orbital long duration and rendezvous missions. The space vehicle is shown.
