The characteristics of a flight path control instrument for producing curved approach profiles and guidance along these profiles are presented. For safety reasons, steep noise abatement approaches must be flown along curved profiles. The problems of flyability, accuracy, and the requirements to be placed on the IFR beacon system and on the flight control system are derived. Flight tests have shown that the techniques discussed contribute to a reduction in the burden on the pilot. (Author)
