The CHSS-2 Haul Down and Handling System, which has been developed during the past two years by the Royal Canadian Navy, in conjunction with Fairey Canada Ltd. as prime contractors, has provided the means of operating large helicopters from small ships under a variety of open ocean conditions. The Beartrap and the various other components of the system are described individually, and with reference to typical takeoff, landing, and deck handling operations. A brief outline of the development and evaluation trials being conducted by VX 10 is also included. This unique system is becoming the subject of great interest by other nations for, in addition to the advancement in the art of anti-submarine warfare which it will provide, it may also extend the non-military uses of helicopters at sea.
