Advent of Beartrap marks major development in operation of maritime helicopters, for new machines of Sea King type -- which weigh up to 10 tons fully loaded -- can be safely operated from smaller ships than would be possible using free landing techniques; application of system can be usefully extended to such situations as oil rigs, and roof-top heliports where, though platform stability is no problem, operation can be adversely affected by high winds or adjacent tall structures.
