Fundamental policies and major objectives of the space activities in Japan is presented. Overview of the Japan's space activities in the following areas are presented: (1) space science including moon and planet exploration, astrophysics, and solar-terrestrial science; (2) general satellite technologies developed by engineering test satellites launched in the past or those scheduled for future launch; (3) launch vehicle development including H- and M-series of launch vehicles, and future space transportation measures such as H-2 Orbiting Plane (HOPE); (4) communication and broadcasting satellites including the Communications and Broadcasting Engineering Test Satellite (COMETS); (5) earth observation satellites including geostationary meteorological and earth observation satellites including the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite (ADEOS) and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM); and (6) space environment utilization including the use of dropping tower equipment, small rocket Test Rocket-1A (TR-1A), the space shuttle, satellites, and the space station Freedom.
