The report describes the design and development of the Type 108-11-3 equipment, which consists of a barometric altitude encoder (Type I or Type II), a test unit, and an encoder/decoder. The purpose of this equipment is to encode pressure altitude in 100-foot increments from -1000 to +50,000 feet for transmission to the ground by means of the ATC Radar Beacon System. The equipment characteristics, static system defect correction, and barometric altitude encoder accuracy are discussed. Recommendations for flight testing and equipment improvement are included.
