Many of serious problems that hampered air traffic control radar beacon system (ATCRBS) have been resolved; remaining difficulties are in the process of solutiondue to joint effort by FAA and Def.Dept. Progress shows airborne radar transponders which can provide reliable tracking and automatic altitude/identity reporting functions. Further problems are interference caused by excessive transponder interrogations, false targets caused by reflections from nearby buildings. Competitive developments are reported.
