Computer simulation programs have been developed, based on experimental data as well as theory, to simulate the performance of current motor vehicles over all types of driving cycles. The simulation includes the effect of the dynamic interactions among the powerplant and drivetrain components, and is quite sophisticated so as to accurately predict the performance changes produced by a wide range of vehicle modifications. Two versions have been developed--a real-time hybrid computer simulation and an all-digital batch program. Simulation of vehicles with Continuously Variable Transmissions as a replacement for the current automatic transmission has shown that a considerable improvement in fuel mileage over present-day automobiles is possible.
