Feasible alternative mission operation modes with respect to minimizing mission costs were investigated for three large solar/astronomy instruments. Different mission modes are identified, consequences for operation, instruments design and development, and relative budgetary costs are presented and optimum mission modes are selected. A systems requirement is outlined and subsystem bardware identified to support the mission mode. Development plans and budgetary costs for the three instruments/missions modes are given.
