Astronomy Spacelab payloads are to utilize mainly the pallet. The pallet is an external unpressurized platform that will be carried in the Orbiter cargo bay for mounting telescopes, antennas, and the instruments and equipment requiring direct space exposure. Current planning for Sortie missions includes a duration of seven days. Astronomy payloads can range from single discipline missions to multidiscipline missions capable of carrying experiments ranging from facility class to balloon and sounding rocket class instruments. Study objectives are related to solar physics, UV/IR astronomy, and high energy astrophysics.
