The OSTA-2 mission is the first NASA materials processing payload to utilize the Orbiter cargo bay for experimentation. It is a cooperative payload with the Federal Republic of Germany and includes three German Project MAUS payloads. The NASA payload on OSTA-2 the Materials Experiment Assembly (MEA)-is planned for reflight on STS-12 and with the German D-l mission (STS-27). The primary mission objectives for OSTA-2 are the engineering verification of the NASA-developed carrier support structure and the materials processing facilities and experiment apparatuses. Secondary mission objectives include the availability of processed materials science experiment specimens and flight experiment data for post-flight scientific investigation. The OSTA-2 experiments will operate on-orbit during periods of low acceleration levels (minimal crew activity, deployment-retrieval operations, and Orbiter thruster firings).
