A description is given of a method for obtaining design characteristics, weight, volume, and cost of various sizes of tankers and dry-cargo ships. Details of component weight, volume, and cost of a number of ships, estimated in accordance with usual shipbuilding practice, were analyzed and the data are plotted in parametric form as working charts. These charts show the relationships of component weight, volume, material cost, and manhours for the respective Navy weight and cost groups. The accuracy of the weight, volume, and cost-estimating techniques is within plus or minus 10 percent except for unusual circumstances. Substantiating data for the working charts (that is, the data points and the rationale for determination of the parametric relationships) are presented. (Author)
