Authors have begun investigation of ship design, construction and costing for surface-displacement ships in maritime service to fill need for simple, reasonably accurate conceptual design procedure, given only cargo payload, speed, and range; results are given in two forms; it is suggested that systems analyst will find adequate summary presentation of total displacement and total initial investment cost per ship as function of payload and speed, while those interested in conceptual design and major components of weight and cost will find useful subsequent sections on data analysis and substantiation.
