Method of obtaining first-order estimate of displacement and cost of tankers and dry cargo ships, as function of payload, speed and range; displacement and cost are summarized as function of payload and speed by single graph each for tanker ships and 2 types of dry cargo ships; components of weight and cost are developed from series design charts and simple equations; more detailed characteristics of ship, including block coefficient, weight of steel, outfit, and machinery, are also presented as well as elements of certain material and labor costs; example of use of method is included.
